The Federated Faculty for Research in Religion and Culture, commonly known as FFRRC is a significant ecumenical venture in the area of theological education. It was initiated and is supported by the Mar Thoma Syrian Theological Seminary, Kottayam belonging to the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam belonging to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Kerala United Theological Seminary, Trivandrum belonging to the Church of South India. It opened a new window for theological formation and advanced learning through co-operation and sharing of facilities and faculty of the three participating seminaries.
Post-Graduate theological studies were introduced in the Serampore University already in 1948 at the Serampore College. The possibility of setting up a Post-Graduate theological faculty was explored for many years in Kerala. The first exploratory meeting consisted of delegates representing the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, Mar Thoma Syrian Theological Seminary, Kottayam, Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and the Kerala United Theological Seminary, Kannammoola, Trivandrum was held at Sophia Centre, Kotayam on 30th July 1977. In the same year itself the respective governing bodies of the Mar Thoma, Orthodox and Kerala United Theological Seminaries gave provisional approval for such an ecumenical venture.
The exploratory committee held on May 14, 1979 resolved to request the Senate of Serampore College to grant affiliation to this ecumenical enterprise for M.Th. studies. The application form duly signed by the Principals was submitted on May 17, 1979. On the basis of the report submitted by the evaluation committee that visited the seminaries between November 1-3, 1979, the Senate meeting held at Madura on the 1st February 1980 granted permission to start the Post-Graduate Center with the name, The Federated Faculty for Research and Culture in Kerala.
The FFRRC was officially inaugurated as the Post-Graduate center (offering M.Th. program) on July 03, the St. Thomas Day of 1980. It was affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College.
The faculty is constituted by the members of the three participating seminaries. The FFRRC has one of the best team of faculty members in the Serampore fraternity.
The student community represents diverse faith traditions from the Orthodox to the Pentecostals. They also represent different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
